I just finished test-driving my '92, after mating the flowmeter off an '88 RX-7 with my 1.6 JR CAI and it works quite well. Somehow the increased airflow seems to make the car quicker even at low RPMs, but maybe it's just my imagination. At high RPMs it just keeps pulling to redline. It may be the best single improvement I've made to the acceleration, and I already had the JR CAI, JR headers, FM cat, and JR catback.
The flowmeter, which is also a flapper type but is a bit larger, fits tightly between the pax-side radiator fan housing and the thermostat housing, but it does fit. I used a Dremel tool to open up the JR airbox's outlet hole where it mates with the meter. The stock bracket mated to the meter pretty well, with a little Dremel adjustment, and the hoses (I have a 3" accordion hose) and wire harness fit perfectly.
On my test drive I found a noticeable rise in power as I approached the rev limiter. The car used to max out over six grand, which can a little frustrating if you're trying to wind out each gear. Now it just keeps pulling at the top end. Well worth the $45 I spent on the meter and the hour or two I spent on the mods. FWIW.

Just finished the RX7 meter install on my '90 w/JRCAI. All is well, car has NO hesitation in going to redline. It just keeps pulling harder. BIG difference.
I did set the meter 4 clicks richer based on Randy & Eric's experience...The idle air screw on the meter needs adjusting for tip-in or off-idleresponse too. I removed the plug by drilling a hole in it, screwing a sheet metal screw in, and pulling itwith a claw hammer. The stock RX7 setting was 3.5 turns out. I screwed it all the way in---0turns. It runs better now, hardly any flatspot.
This job is not for the weak. Probably a 5-6 in difficulty (scale of 10). Lot's of grinding on plastic & metal to get things to fit. Also hard to find a suitable rubber accordian boot. Got one out of a junkyard for $2 and made it work. You do get great HP for you cash though! Total expense was $42 including shipping of meter.

I just finished installing an RX-7 AFM in my SSC 91. The car feels much stronger above 4k rpm....This is a fairly simple mod and seems to yield great results for very little money. The RX-7 AFM has a 29% larger cross section than the stock unit. If you have a stock AFM on your car quit screwing around with other engine performance mods like CAI's. You need an RX-7 AFM.... I spent about $90 on the whole install.

I had a RB CAI on my 1993 1.8 conversion. I decided to try the RX7 A/F with just a filter end and no CAI. WOW what a difference! I used to know the red line was coming by the lack of umph now I have to watch the tach; it'll power right through it! It was worth a lot more than 5 HP!
Thanks for sharring so much info.
